Moving apartments can be a stressful, exhausting process. Moving with kids is even harder. Between the crankiness, the hunger, and sleep deprivation, you’ll have your hands full – and we aren’t even talking about the kids here! To make your move from apartment to apartment as smooth (and safe) as possible, we’ve compiled all of our top tips for moving with kids. Outside of driving the moving truck, we’re here to give you as much moving help as we can!
Before your family dives headfirst into the moving process, it can be helpful to prepare your older children with a little planning meeting. Explain exactly what is going to happen and let them ask questions. Most importantly, explain how much you’ll need their help. Empower them, and make them feel included in the process! If they know they play an important role in this big adventure, they will be more motivated to step up to the plate and help.
In your single days you may have been able to pack up the night before a move, but that’s a recipe for disaster once you add children to the mix! Gather the boxes and start packing up rooms a couple weeks before moving day. Work a little bit every time you have free time, so you aren’t completely frazzled and overwhelmed when the big day arrives.
Children want to be involved in this exciting process, so encourage them to organize and pack their own things (if they’re old enough). Encourage them to pack the things they use every day and donate anything they don’t need anymore. Not only will this keep your kids busy, it will also be comforting for them to see that they can bring the things they love to the new apartment.
Don’t pack up everything just yet! Set aside a few things that will keep them occupied when the apartment is bare. Things like puzzles, board games, crayons, and coloring books are great. An iPad loaded with videos can be a lifesaver!
Even if you’re Super Mom or Super Dad, sometimes it’s wise to pick your battles and get some help. Enlist a babysitter or relative to take the kids off your hands while you pack up the kitchen and living room. To make your life a lot easier, hire movers to help with the heavy lifting! Compare prices for local moving companies, and let them ease the burden of your move.
