It is also where the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 actually took place. The victory of this battle ensured that Texas, then a republic, became independent. Some people refer to it as "the Birthplace of Texas" because of this.

Just a short drive away is the Clear Lake area, with a multitude of restaurants, boating facilities, and NASA's Johnson Space Center, of which you can take a tour to see how this agency insures that most astronauts make it out into space and back safely. Galveston is only about an hour's drive, with plenty of beaches and dining available.
