Apartment Living in North Dakota

What do you think of when you think of the "Peace Garden State?" Many might think of the Cohen Brother's classic movie Fargo. Others may picture North Dakota's vast farmland. Or perhaps it's the state's railways and the infamous Wells-Fargo Express?

North Dakota is one of the nation's most rural states. 90 percent of the state's land is farmland and it has the most national wildlife refuges than any other state. Another interesting claim to fame is that the state has the most churches per capita of any state in the nation. Perhaps it is because they are praying for better weather. The temperatures in winter are bit extreme, plan to hideout in your apartment when the thermostat continues to dip below zero. Or you could enjoy all of the state's popular winter sports such as ice fishing, sledding, skiing and skating.

Agriculture is North Dakota's main source of income and it ranks first in the nation for the production of spring wheat, durum wheat, sunflowers, barley, all dry edible beans, pinto beans, canola, flaxseed, all dry edible peas, honey, lentils, oats and navy beans. In recent years, manufacturing is picking up as a contributor too. Since North Dakota is the 12th most affordable state within the United States, apartments are fairly cheap. The crime rate is well below average and North Dakota has the honor of having the lowest violent crime rate of all the states.

North Dakota has the 19th largest area in the USA, but is the 48th smallest in number of residents. Most of the state's population and income comes from the urban cities of Fargo, Bismarck and Grand Forks, where you'll find the majority of apartments.

Fargo Apartments

With only about 100,000 residents, Fargo is still the state's largest city. The city is a railway, financial and medical hub for the state. North Dakota State University is located in Fargo, which has students competing with the business sector for nice apartments. Fargo also has the honor of having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the U.S. That combined with an overall cost of living 30 percent below the national average, makes finding a cheap apartment easy. Can you imagine writing a check for as little as $285 for a one-bedroom apartment?

Bismarck Apartments

Half the size of Fargo, Bismarck is the state's capital. North Dakota is located along the Missouri River and offers homeowners and apartment leaseholders plenty of excuses to play hooky and go fishing, swimming or boating. Apartments are a bit more expensive in this area but not by much. A one-bedroom starts at $300.

Grand Forks Apartments

The University of North Dakota, the oldest and largest college in the state, is located in Grand Forks. Grand Forks Air Force is also located in this eventful city. Students might find that they have to compete with the military for some of the city's more desirable apartments. Grand Forks has several distinct neighborhoods, which include the Red River and the downtown area. In an effort to increase housing, developers are starting to convert and build more apartments in this area. Like the rest of the state, apartments are extremely inexpensive.
