Apartment Living in New Jersey

With the bustling cities of New York and Philadelphia nearby, New Jersey is often called a commuter or bedroom community. Nearly nine million residents enjoy this state's beautiful beaches, stately manors, flourishing farms, picturesque communities, historic homes and stylish apartments.

The "Garden State" is the second wealthiest state in the country with nine of New Jersey's counties in the most prosperous 100 in America, which include Monmouth, Bergen, and Morris. You'll find a nice selection of apartments in the state's affluent suburbs. The majority of "New Jerseyans" or "New Jerseyites" as they are sometimes called, live in homes and apartments in the urban areas of the northwest.

Even though farms cover nearly a million acres, New Jersey's economy thrives on industry, namely chemicals and tourism. Atlantic City and Jersey Shore bring in thousands of tourists every year to their casinos and riverboats. Retail, real estate, and education contribute to the state's strong economy as well. Rutgers University, the largest and eighth oldest institution in the U.S., Princeton University and The State University of New Jersey bring in thousands of students and consequently, a large demand for apartments.

As one of the most expensive states in the country, the cost of living is an intimidating 32 percent above the national average, and houses and apartments are nearly 75 percent above average. While New York City's glitz and glamour influences New Jersey's apartment prices, the average price throughout the state is still under $900 and the price will vary according to the city in which your apartment resides.

Newark Apartments

The largest and oldest city in the state and third oldest city in the nation is Newark. Called "The Gateway to New Jersey", Newark is a hub for finance, transportation, and commercial business. Newark International Airport is the seventh busiest airport in the nation. If the crowded inner city is not to your liking, you won't have to travel far to find several charming and historic communities offering an assorted selection of homes and apartments to rent. Watch out though, apartments in Newark are pretty pricey. One-bedroom apartments are currently costing nearly $1,100 a month.

Jersey City Apartments

If you think a thousand dollars a month for rent is beyond your reach, don't look for an apartment in Jersey City. Jersey City is a diverse city with hundreds of eclectic restaurants, shops, hotels, cultural attractions and apartments to choose from. Home to the state's largest oasis of green space, Liberty State Park, Jersey City offers apartment renters over 1,112 acres to run to after a busy day of work. Whether you want an apartment overlooking the park or taking in the city's magnificent skylines, Jersey City will have what you are looking for but at a hefty price. Apartments are rather expensive with a one-bedroom apartment costing you nearly $2,000 a unit, per month.

Trenton Apartments

To find a more reasonable apartment you might want to explore the state's capital, Trenton. Apartments in this city of nearly 100,000 start in the $950 range. Trenton is located between New York City and Philadelphia, making it ideal for commuters; however, the city doesn't have the best reputation for being safe. Trenton has been ranked as having some of the worst crime in the state so be sure to really scout the neighborhoods before settling on an apartment.
