Apartment Living in Montana

With a modest statewide population of nearly a million over a territory of 145,552 square miles, one might jokingly say that the people of this state are outnumbered by grizzly bears. The state has one of the largest grizzly bear populations next to Alaska. Montana is the nation's fourth largest in area, but the 44th smallest in populace. You won't be able to find an apartment just anywhere.

Named after the Rocky Mountains, Montana is the Spanish word for mountain. Nicknamed "Big Sky Country," "Land of Shining Mountains," "Bonanza State" and the "Treasure State," Montana is all that and then some. Its open land, rugged mountains and vast, wistful prairie lands make this state a popular home for outdoor enthusiasts. The Continental Divide splits the territory into two distinct eastern and western regions. The western region has the Rocky Mountains, while the eastern area is made up of low-lying plains. The Great Plains are in the northern region. Agriculture, lumber, cattle ranching and mineral extraction makes up a large portion of the economy along with tourism, which is a major attraction to millions of visitors each year coming to see the natural wonders of Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake and Yellowstone National Park. The service sectors contribute to Montana's strong job market.

You'll have to watch major league sports on the tube in your apartment, due to the state's rather small population. Montana doesn't have any national teams to root for; however, there are plenty of local teams and activities to partake in. From trout fishing to horseback riding and snow skiing, Montana claims to be "the last best place." Now you won't find any really large cities or an abundance of apartments in Montana; instead, you find a scattering of small towns and units rich in personality.

Billings Apartments

The state's largest city is Billings and is located in the south-central portion of the state. The city boasts of "a vibrant community known for its quiet neighborhoods and bustling business districts." Nicknamed as the "Magic City," the city was a railroad town in the late 1800's and named after Frederick H. Billings. Billings has been named one of the top three best cities in the U.S. to raise a family. Depending on location, Billings apartments vary in price from $500 and up.

Missoula Apartments

Next you will want to search for an apartment in the second largest city in the state, Missoula. This city has over 85,000 residents and is a hub for education, medicine, and retail. The "Garden City" is known for having some beautiful landscapes. Missoula is home to The University of Montana, making the apartment market a bit more expensive, almost twice as much as Helena. Apartments start in the $700 range.

Helena Apartments

Helena hit the map back in the mid-1800's with the claim of gold and silver. Today, the "Queen City of the Rockies" is the state's capital. Apartments in this quaint city are fairly inexpensive in comparison to other states that have a slightly higher cost of living, which is appealing to future apartment tenants. Apartments go for as little as $300 for a one-bedroom apartment.
