Kalamazoo lies in southwest Micigan, about midway between Detroit and Chicago. It's almost directly across Lake Michigan from Chicago, so once they get those flying cars ready to go, the trip will be a lot shorter. Major transportation route around and through Kalamazoo are I-95, US 131, M-43 and M-96. The Kal-Haven Trail is for bicyclists, and runs 34 miles from South Haven, Michigan nearly into Kalamazoo on the western side. It will be extended into Kalamazoo shortly. Kalamazoo has an international airport. It also has a city bus service, with provides good service for certain areas of town, and poor to none for others. If you need public transportation or want to help the environment, it's best to ask residents carefully about how good the bus service is in your prospective neighborhood.

The population of Kalamazoo is about 72,000. About 70% of those are white, 20% Black, 5% Hispanic, and 3% Asian. Economically, Kalamazoo varies a lot, depending on the neighborhood, but the average income per household comes out to about $30,000, and for a family it's about $42,000.

Kalamazoo is home to Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, and a number of life science and biotechnology research and manufacturing companies, such as Pfizer, Kalexsyn, PharmOptima, and Ceetox. Largely due to downsizing by these firms and others, the population of Kalamazoo and most of Michigan has declined in recent years.

Apartments and Neighborhoods in Kalamazoo

There are 22 neighborhoods in Kalamazoo, each with their own personality. A few highlights of neighborhoods you may or may not be interested in: Edison, on the east side, is part Spanish speaking and part gay and lesbian central. College kids and their housing situations are the majority by far just west of downtown near Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University. North and east areas have a lot of folks who are struggling to get by financially. Finally, in the center are the historical residential areas of Stuart, displaying Victorian style homes.

Things to Do in Kalamazoo

Shopping, arts and culture, sports, park facilities. You name it. Kalamazoo's got it somewhere. If you're a birdwatcher or a hiker, try The Kleinstuck Marsh, south of Maple St, between Westnedge Ave and Oakland Drive. Don't miss the Farmer's Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays during the early summer to late autumn. It's at Bank Street, and is a great place to buy local, healthy produce and flowers, and meet your neighbors.

There are a number of local breweries, such as Bell's or Kraftbrau Brewery. Bell's celebrates "Eccentric Day" when college finals are over. The Art Hop happens every first Friday of the month, with different downtown locations. Hopefully the name is self explanatory. If theater is your thing, Kalamazoo's got lots of local thespians, including the Kalamazoo Civic Players, New Vic, Theatre, The Whole Art Theatre, and The Barn Theatre.
