Baton Rouge Apartments for Rent
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Baton Rouge is a Mississippi River city, about 85 miles northwest of New Orleans. Up until Hurricane Katrina, it was the second largest city in Louisiana, but is now the largest, and only time will tell whether many of the Katrina victims will be able or willing to move back to New Orleans. Formerly, Baton Rouge had about 2224,000 residents, but post-Katrina estimates are around 300,000. For now, Baton Rouge is the center of Louisiana, and some of the culture that was already there or emigrated, such as jazz, Cajun music and food, and zydeco music and dancing. The racial mix of the city is nearly equal between blacks (about 46%) and whites (about 46%). About 3% are Asian, 2% are Hispanic, and there's an occasional other race or a mix in the mix. Baton Rouge residents mostly rank as lower class in the economic strata nationally, but the cost of living in Baton Rouge is much lower than many northern cities. The average household income is about $31,000; for a family, it's closer to $40,000.
