Founded in 1849 thanks to the railroad-based expansion of the Chicago area, West Chicago, Illinois is a suburb of Chicago with a current population of 26,554 residents. Formerly named Turner Junction after its founder, West Chicago, Illinois had three rail lines by 1850, starting with the Galena & Chicago Union line. West Chicago, Illinois' commerce emphasis continued through the century. In the 1880s, the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railroad offered free land along its West Chicago, Illinois tracks to factory owners looking for Chicago-area sites. And in 1896, West Chicago, Illinois residents voted for the name change to the city's current appellation in an effort to further encourage development.

West Chicago Parks

Each year, over 20,000 people enjoy the approximately 600 programs sponsored by the West Chicago Parks District. These recreation and conservation programs encourage appreciation and use of the West Chicago parks.

The thirteen West Chicago parks span more than 390 acres. The West Chicago Parks District also includes the Prairie Oaks Family Aquatic Center in Reed-Keppler Park.

West Chicago Schools

West Chicago schools fall into four school districts - West Chicago Elementary School District 33, Benjamin School District 25, West Chicago Community High School District 94 and St. Charles School District 303. St. Mary's Catholic School, a traditional Catholic educational institution serving West Chicago school children and students from surrounding areas, is located in West Chicago and provides a private alternative for families so inclined. These exceptional educational institutions give parents plenty of choices. West Chicago Community High School, the high school for most West Chicago kids, has received a commendation from the U.S. Department of Education for its teachers and curriculae.
