Originally named Bremen, thanks to its strong German immigrant community, Tinley Park, Illinois was founded in 1853. The city sat on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad lines, and economic activity included trade, farming, hospitality and an advanced wind-powered grain elevator and mill. In 1890 the city of Bremen became Tinley Park, Illinois to pay homage to Samuel Tinley, Sr., the city's original rail station agent.

Tinley Park landmarks also include the "Old Zion" Landmark Church (site of the Tinley Park Historical Society and museum), the Centennial Monument at Tinley Park's first train station, and the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre, a venue which seats 30,000.
