Skokie Apartments for Rent

Skokie, Illinois

A retail and manufacturing crossroads, Skokie, Illinois is a suburb of Chicago, about 15 miles northwest of the Loop. Skokie, Illinois has a current population of 63,348 residents.

Originally, Skokie, Illinois was incorporated as Niles Centre. However, a nearby village named Niles prompted a name change to the Village of Skokie in 1940. The region stayed fairly rural until the post-World War II baby boom suburbanization. In the '50s, retail and commercial also made its mark on Skokie. That was when the Old Orchard Shopping Center was built, and the center (redubbed as Westfield Old Orchard) is now one of the elite shopping malls of the North Shore area of Chicagoland.

The name Skokie itself has an uncertain origin. Most agree that the name came from an American Indian word for fire or marsh. Some claim that the source phrase is Potawatomi for "big swamp"; others claim it's "skoutay" or "scoti," the Algonquian words for fire; and still others point to the Ojibwa language, in which "miishkooki" means marsh.

Skokie Jobs

As mentioned above, Skokie has strong economic roots in retail and manufacturing. Healthcare is a factor in the Skokie job market too; Forest City Enterprises has revived a mothballed Pfizer research plant in downtown Skokie. Jobs at the Illinois Science and Technology Park include positions at chemistry, toxicology and genomics laboratories. Healthcare activity also trickles downsteam into other Skokie jobs; in 2006, Evanston Northwestern Healthcare revealed plans to relocate and centralize its IT operations in Skokie, Illinois.
