The first residents of Schaumburg, Illinois were Sauk, Pottawatomie, Kickapoo and Fox tribespeople, but German and American settlers started to infiltrate the region in the 1840s and 1850s. Originally, Schaumburg, Illinois was known as "Sarah's Grove," which referred to a stand of trees at the north side of the town, near which lived three young ladies, all named Sarah: Sarah Frisbe, Sarah Smith and Sarah McChesney. However, despite some consideration of the names Lutherville and Lutherburg, Schaumburg was formally registered under its modern name on March 7, 1956.
The name has its origins in Schaumburg-Lippe, the region where many residents had their German roots. Schaumburg continued to attract German expatriates and German-Americans until the town was virtually all German-occupied by 1870. The oldest Schaumburg church, St. Peter Lutheran, conducted German-language services until 1970.
