Rockford Apartments for Rent
Rockford, Illinois
Known as "The Forest City," Rockford, Illinois is a mid-sized city located on both banks of the Rock River. The county seat of Winnebago County, Rockford contains 150,115 residents. Neighboring communities that border Rockford, Illinois are considered an integral part of the Rockford metro area. The metro area populace numbers 320,000-plus residents, making it the third-largest such region in Illinois.
The Rock River is a focal point of the Rockford area and is its most recognizable physical landmark. A tributary of the Mississippi, the river has its source in southeast Wisconsin and in its 285 miles passes by many Wisconsin and Illinois cities, including Beloit, Dixon, Moline and South Beloit.
Rockford Attractions
In the warmer months, the city is a popular destination thanks to the outdoor Rockford attractions like its natural preserves and parks, many golf courses, gardens and arboretums. The Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford, a fourteen-acre complex on Spring Creek Road, is open to the public and was named the top Japanese garden on the continent by a 2004 issue of the Journal of Japanese Gardening.
Rockford also lures visitors with the rococo Coronado Theatre, a downtown vintage movie house restored in 1999; the Midway Village and Museum Center, a Victorian residential enclave; and the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, one of the oldest music organizations in the country.
Famous Rockford Residents
Rockford is also the present or past home of many notable people and entities:
- John Bayard Anderson, 1980 presidential candidate and U.S. Representative
- actress Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid)
- Whole Earth Catalog founder Stewart Brand
- the rock band Cheap Trick
- actress Susan Saint James
- skater and Olympic medalist Janet Lynn
- astronaut Janice Voss
- actress Barbara Hale
- actor Aidan Quinn
- the Rockford Peaches, the women's baseball team made famous by the movie League of Their Own
Rockford Growth
In the mid 20th century, the arrival of the Northwest Tollway sucked a lot of the commercial might out of downtown Rockford. Growth moved closer to the tollway several miles east, and now the business center of Rockford can more easily be pinpointed as either East State Street or Perryville Road. However, much new commercial and residential development may be in the future for the downtown Rockford area. Rockford is contemplating the construction of a Convention Center, Casino and Riverwalk and the renovation of the Main Street Corridor (Route 2) and the downtown MetroCentre.
