Not far to the northwest of Chicago, Palatine, Illinois is a village in Cook County founded in 1855 by pioneers who journeyed to the northern part of the state in the wake of the Black Hawk War. Like many Chicagoland suburbs, Palatine was born at a railway station - in Palatine's case, it was a station for the Chicago and North Western Railway.

Until the event's dissolution, Palatine, Illinois was the site of the annual Cook County Fair. William Rainey Harper College, or Harper College for short, is a community college in Palatine, Illinois that offers two-year associates degrees. Harper College in Palatine was founded in 1965 and named after the first president of the University of Chicago. Harper College's most famous alumna is Marlee Matlin, the star of Children of a Lesser God and the first actress with a hearing impairment to win an Academy Award.
