Named for the largest above-ground granite dome on the North American continent, Stone Mountain, Georgia is a town in DeKalb County. Stone Mountain, Georgia is a haven to unique flora and fauna as well as to a current population of 7,145 residents. Stone Mountain's Main Street is only a quarter-mile's walk from Stone Mountain Park.
Stone Mountain, Georgia got its start as a post office and hotel. The eponymous mountain motivated Aaron Cloud to plant an observation tower, restaurant and club at the summit for tourists and visitors. In 1839, the small community added a store and a name - New Gibraltar. However, in 1847 the Georgia legislature renamed the town to be Stone Mountain.
In 1864, the Civil War ravaged Stone Mountain, Georgia when General John McPherson's troops demolished the village, but the community survived and continues to thrive today. In June 2006, Stone Mountain was named as a "Certified City of Ethics" by the Georgia Municipal Association.
Stone Mountain Arts
As a satellite community to Atlanta, Stone Mountain is proud of its artistic heritage, and the town is or has been home to musicians Nivea Hamilton, Kevin Cassels (of the rock group Mother Vinegar) and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas (of TLC).
ART Station is one strong testimonial to the strength of Stone Mountain arts. A non-profit arts center based in the old Trolley Car Barn and Power Station, ART Station was named after a 1913 photograph of a trolley car in front of the Trolley Car Barn. In the photo, the car bears the words "Atlanta Rapid Transit" - or ART. ART Station continues to move people today, tallying 50,000 patrons and students per year. The Stone Mountain, Georgia center includes five galleries, rehearsal studios, a ceramics studio, administrative offices and a small theatre.
Also, in 2005, Afeni Shakur, Tupac Shakur's mother, broke ground on the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain. The Center's mission is to open new doors for youth through the arts; it offers classes in drama, dance and writing as well as a day camp for kids.
