Sanford is a city in, and the county seat of, Seminole County, Florida. Sanford's population is currently 47,257, making it one of Orlando, Florida's largest suburbs. Sanford historically has been an agricultural and resort area, but has recently welcomed the Delta Connection Academy, Seminole Community College and the Central Florida Zoological Park. Sanford sits along the northern end of the I-4 Corridor between Daytona Beach and Orlando. The Central Florida Greene Way begins in Sanford and forms the Eastern Beltway around Orlando ending at Walt Disney World.

Sanford's origins harken back to General Andrew Jackson and the Seminole Wars of the early 1800s. In 1835, the Seminoles burned the nearby port of Palatka, and Jackson reacted by establishing an army outpost on the southern edge of Lake Monroe. After a battle in 1837, the outpost was named Fort Mellon, and later, as a community formed around the fort and its adjoining trading post, it became Mellonville. General Henry Sanford bought a plot of more than 12,000 acres to the west of Mellonville in 1870. In 1877, the growing community and orange plantation absorbed Mellonville and incorporated as Sanford. Soon, with help from the South Florida Railroad, Sanford and its surrounds became the world's largest provider of oranges.
