The city was formally registered on July 3, 1888. Camp Pendleton, the training ground for the famous Navajo code talkers of World War II, was erected in 1928, bringing great numbers of U.S. Marines to the area. Oceanside continued to grow with World War II training and manufacturing activity, and with the establishment of a '50s-era ammunition plant within the city's boundaries.
