Salem, Oregon
Salem is the capital of Oregon. It's in the green and lush Willamette River
Valley. It's about 47 miles south of Portland. The name of Salem comes from two
words meaning peace, the Hebrew word Shalom, and the Arabic word Salam. It's
about an hour west of the Cascase Mountains, and about an hour east of the
ocean. This is a beautiful area of the U.S., and Salem is encircled by green,
flowers, fruit orchards, vineyards, and fields. The surrounding area is Oregon's
wine country, and a major area for agricultural food processing. The major
transportation route is Interstate Highway 5, which runs north and south.
The population within the city limits is about 150,00, and in the greater Oregon
metropolitan region, it's more like 370,000. Salem has historically been a home
for mostly lower middle class individuals, with an average household income of
about $40,000, while it's slightly more ($47,000) for families.

Salem has 19 neighborhoods, including the central area, western neighborhoods
near the hills which are separated from downtown by the Marion Street Bridge,
the Fairmont area just south and west of downtown near the governor's house,
which is an older neighborhood, and Candalaria, a newer neighborhood. Apartments
are somewhat scattered throughout the city, but do tend to congregate closer to

Things to Do in Salem
Attractions in Salem include the state capitol building, the Mission Mill
Museum, a historic museum which includes several historic structures moved
there, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, to display Willamette University's art
collection, and the Elsinor Theatre, built in 1926 and saved from demolition by
a grassroots effort.
You can visit the largest of Salem's 42 parks is Minto-Brown Island Park
at about 900 acres, then go see one of the smallest parks in the world, Waldo
Park, containing one beautiful by lonely tree.
